In het begin van de zestiger jaren besloot een groep jongeren uit Den Haag om samen Rock & Roll muziek te gaan spelen. Ze dachten dat de muziek die ze maakten goed genoeg was om een "echte" Rock & Roll band te beginnen. Het initiatief daartoe werd genomen door Buddy Bosman en twee zoons van de Wijnens Riems familie. Samen met Jim Daniel werd begonnen met de eerste repetities in een eenvoudige woonkamer. Voor deze tijd was dat niet ongewoon om te repeteren in kelderboxen of woonkamers. Al vrij snel na de start van de groep kwam Eric Berger en Ferry Schulz de groep versterken. De groep begon onder de naam de "Driften Steelers" met optredens. Vrij snel echter werd de naam veranderd in de "Driftin' Steelers". De repetities van de groep vonden steevast plaats in een kelderbox behorend bij de woning aan de Pieter Langendijkstraat 155. Vele buren in deze straat konden genieten van de klanken welke voortdurend uit de kelderbox naar buiten ontsnapten. De instrumenten en versterkers waren in deze periode, zeker in het prille begin, erg karig. Voor de versterking werden oude radio's gebruikt. In het prille begin oefende de groep hard en werd er vaak opgetreden tijdens tuinfeesten. Ook was de groep vaak present bij talent audities waar uiteindelijk veel optredens uit voortvloeiden. Men speelde o.a. regelmatig in zaal Amicitia, en de Dierentuin in Den Haag. Na een rustigte periode, waarin weinig werd gespeeld, kwam de groep in contact met manager Ralph Belle. Ralph arrangeerde de groep voor optredens door heel Nederland en regelde de aanschaf voor echte versterkers en goede instrumenten. Met name ontwikkelde en gebruikte de groep een aparte speakerbox voor een goede weergave van de baspartij. Op deze box waren andere groepen jaloers, het was een echte "state of the art" product. De groep trad ook regelmatig op bij de nabij het Haagse ADO stadion gelegen Rolschaatsbaan in het Zuiderpark. De groep trad ook regelmatig op in shows samen met de Blue Diamonds, Electric Johnny & The Skyrockets en vele anderen.

Later in de tijd verliet Eric Berger de groep en werd vervangen door zanger Rob Smit.
Daarna vond er ook nog een wisseling plaats, Ferry Schultz werd op drums vervangen door Peter Bax.

In the early sixties, a group of young boys, living in the Hague, decided to come together and start making Rock and Roll music. They thought that the sound they produced seemed good and then they formed a band. Initially the group consisted out of Buddy Bosman and two sons of the Wijnen Riems’ family, together with their nephew Jim Daniel (playing in the living room of the apartment).
Soon, Eric Berger joined the group and also Ferry Schulz joined the group.
The initial name that was given to the group was Driften Steelers and soon thereafter the band’s name was corrected to Driftin’ Steelers. The practice of the music was in the cellar of the Pieter Langendijkstraat 155 and many a neighbour was exposed to the “musical pollution” of the group at that time. Initially, the amplifiers were old radios and finally, a real drumset could be acquired. In the beginning, the group was practicing hard and played in garden parties. Several auditions were made, which resulted in public appearances in the “Amicitia”, Dierentuin,v.d Valk, etc. After a certain amount of time, when the group went into a “non playing” spell, a manager came in (Ralph Belle) and he arranged that the group could do performances in the Netherlands and real good amplifiers could be purchased. When the group fabricated their speaker box for the bass, it turned out to be a “state of the art” piece of equipment. Many other groups envied to have this box. Meanwhile the individuals bought there own better instruments, which also improved the sound and enthusiasm of the group. The group also managed to play regularly in the “rolschaats baan” canteen, which was located across the ADO soccer fields in the Hague.
The initial group consisted of the following people:
Eric Berger - Vocal and also 2nd Lead guitar
Buddy Bosman - Lead guitar
Ferry Schulz – 2nd Lead guitar and Accomp. guitar
Joy Wijnen Riems – Drums
Later, Eric Berger went out of the group, to look for “greener pastures” in a different band and he was replaced by Rob Smit as the new singer.
At a certain time, Ferry Schulz also left the group and when Joy went to work for the Dutch merchant navy, Peter Bax came in the band to replace him on the drums.
The group performed in many cities and towns of Holland with amongst others:
The Blue Diamonds, Electric Johnny and the Skyrockets and many others.
